The different types of lighthouse clocks vary in size design and price. The very first design comes out of the 1800s from the original manufacture and his son under the name of Simon Willard and Son. The material for making these clocks were relatively cheap and this enabled the craftsmen to sell these at a very inexpensive price. Designed to sit on the mantels of many homes there were different variations in its making to fit the taste of potential buyers. These timepieces were among the first alarm clocks ever made in America.

Standing at a traditional height of 24 to 30 inches tall, these decorative pieces are custom made from materials such as mahogany, brass and other materials.

On some models there is a simple stenciled pattern with a classic scene etched on the base. One thing that they each hold in common is the dome shaped glass that covers the working mechanism enabling you to see the innards while in full operation. These handcrafted master pieces also resemble the traditional light house.

The original manufacturers started their operation in America until the owners son decided he would leave the family business and open his own shop in Boston. It was known that the timekeepers also showed authenticity by baring the inscription Willard Patent inscribed on the dials that were made from porcelain or painted iron. Some of the others had the designers signature displayed on their cases.

At the time these vintage masterpieces were being made they were made by hand and din not comply to the change of mass production other manufactures were using.

the new way of building clocks made it possible to mass produce at very cheap prices and could be sold around $2 a piece. Finding these antique designs now could cost quite a bit of money depending on the make and where you find it.

Today you can find one of the original lighthouse clocks proudly displayed in the White House library. And from time to time one may pop up in an estate auction or antique gift shop. What a marvelous piece of artwork to display on the fire place mantel.
